This is a giclee print of an original painting on canvas. My mom immigrated to the USA from the Philippines. This painting was inspired by a story my mom told me about a time during my grandpa’s 5-year absence. He had gone off to live with someone else. My grandma and 9 kids, including my mom, banded together to do whatever they could for an income. My grandma and mom took broiled fish to sell around town door to door, walking for half a day. A huge storm hit one day, causing a bridge they needed to cross to collapse. So they walked under a waterfall to get to where they needed to go, and spent the night at a relative’s house.
While I intended the bronze streaks to be bridge debris, I realized that they were starting to look like roots. As I thought about who my grandma was, I thought about her unwavering tenacity. Come hell or high water, she was the one who always, always made it home. That is who I came from.
