Challenges

Havahart® offers a wide range of cage traps in multiple sizes, feature sets, and price points. While the product variety is a strength, it also presents a challenge: customers often struggle to determine which trap is right for their situation.

Rather than relying on product listings alone, Havahart® needed a way to guide users through the decision-making process in a clear, humane, and confidence-building way.

Key considerations included:

  • Many traps with overlapping features and similar appearances
  • Users arriving with different levels of knowledge and urgency
  • The need to balance education, clarity, and product conversion
  • Designing for both desktop and mobile browsing behavior

Insights from Google Analytics and Hotjar heatmaps revealed that users needed a more structured, step-by-step comparison experience aligned with how they think about wildlife problems.

Strategy & Approach

I approached the project as a guided decision tool, rather than a traditional product grid.

  • Size-based entry point
The guide introduces the five trap sizes (X-Small through X-Large) as the primary navigation mechanism. This immediately narrows the field and mirrors how users naturally think about animal size.
  • Pest-specific recommendations
Each size is paired with clear visual indicators showing the animals it is recommended for, helping users quickly confirm whether they are on the right path.
  • Progressive disclosure of features
Expandable sections allow users to explore trap features, such as door mechanisms or timed release, without overwhelming them up front. This keeps the interface approachable while still offering depth.
  • Side-by-side comparison table
A comparison table summarizes key specifications, including door design, dimensions, and weight, enabling users to make confident, informed decisions at a glance.

Outcomes & Impact

The Animal Trap Guide transforms a complex product catalog into a structured, educational experience that:

  • Reduces friction in product selection
  • Helps users feel informed rather than pressured
  • Supports purchasing decisions through clarity, not persuasion

The project demonstrates how educational UX design can support product selection by guiding users through comparison without relying on sales-driven tactics.
