Kid Heroes Productions is a Filipino-American–led creative studio producing comic book series that center Filipino-American hero narratives. I was commissioned to create illustrated variant covers for several of their titles, including Lumpia with a Vengeance, Jemini, and The Legendary Lumpia Squad.

Challenges

  • Designing variant covers that feel distinct while staying true to each series’ established visual language
  • Capturing the personality and essence of of the narrative in a single, high-impact image
  • Creating culturally specific imagery that feels celebratory, respectful, and story-driven
  • Designing a special edition cover for Filipino-American History Month, set in the early 1900s

Strategy & Approach

Each cover began with deep character and story immersion, understanding tone, setting, and emotional stakes. I then illustrated dynamic composition, expressive lighting, and cinematic framing to ensure the artwork felt immediate, iconic, and collectible.

For the Filipino-American History Month edition of Lumpia with a Vengeance, the illustration intentionally shifted tone and era, placing the characters in an Ellis Island arrival scene to visually connect superhero storytelling with real immigration history.

Outcomes & Impact

  • Successfully launched multiple variant covers across Kid Heroes Productions’ comic lines
  • Created a culturally resonant Filipino-American History Month edition that expanded the narrative scope of the series
  • Joined Kid Heroes’ creative team on a San Diego Comic-Con 2022 panel, alongside the director, actors, and artists, discussing representation and storytelling in comics

This project demonstrates how illustrated comic book covers can merge cultural storytelling, character identity, and cinematic illustration to create collectible art that deepens narrative impact and audience connection.
