Kwentitas Romance Anthologies

Forevermore

Pasko Na, My Love

Book Cover Design

This project involved designing and digitally hand-painting two illustrated covers for romance anthologies created by The Kwentitas, a collective of Filipino-American romance authors, published under EOT Publications, and led by author Maida Malby.

The books center on a shared fictional Filipino-American family set in Napa Valley, requiring the covers to feel visually connected while remaining distinct.

Challenges

  • Visually representing an entire anthology—multiple stories, authors, and emotional tones—within a single cohesive image
  • Designing covers that felt romantic, inviting, and culturally specific without leaning on stereotypes
  • Managing practical publishing constraints, including trim size, margins, spine width, and space for multiple author names
  • Composing illustrated scenes that left clear visual hierarchy for title, subtitle, and typography
  • Creating covers that felt like part of the same world while reflecting different seasonal and emotional moods

Strategy & Approach

I approached the covers as illustrated environments rather than literal scenes, using setting, symbolism, and atmosphere to suggest story rather than depict it directly.

  • Napa Valley landscapes were used to ground the series in place
  • Color palette and lighting distinguished tone: soft florals and warmth for Forevermore, festive evening light and holiday symbolism for Pasko Na, My Love
  • Digital hand-painting allowed for painterly texture while maintaining control over layout and print requirements
  • Typography and illustration were developed in tandem to ensure balance and legibility across formats

Outcomes & Impact

  • Delivered cohesive, shelf-ready covers that supported both storytelling and discoverability
  • Established a recognizable visual identity for the anthology series
  • Balanced artistic expression with real-world publishing constraints, ensuring smooth production and distribution

The project demonstrates how illustrated cover design can distill the emotional and cultural essence of a multi-author anthology into a single, cohesive visual narrative.
